Pre-filled forms through a link

A link can open your request form with fields already completed. It removes questions the customer should not have to answer.

How it works

The request form reads values from the link that opened it. Point a customer at a link carrying the form and the field values, and they arrive at a form that is already partly filled in.

Build the link

  1. Start from your help centre's new request address.
  2. Add the form, identified by its ID.
  3. Add each field you want filled, identified by its ID, with the value.
  4. Test the link while signed out, and check the fields are set and editable.

Field and form IDs are found in Admin Center. This is one of the places you genuinely need them rather than the display names.

Where it earns its place

  • From a product page. The product is already known, so do not ask.
  • From an order confirmation. The order number goes in the link.
  • From an error screen in your own software. Version and error code prefilled turns a vague report into a useful one.

The customer can change what you prefilled, and anyone can craft a link. Treat prefilled values as a convenience, not as verified data. Nothing that matters for entitlement or pricing should be trusted because it arrived this way.

Keep it out of the URL if it is personal

Values in a link end up in browser history and in any system that logs addresses. Prefill an order number by all means; do not prefill anything you would not want written down in a log.
