Searching and filtering triggers

Finding which of eighty triggers touches a field or sends a particular email, without opening them one at a time.

Search and filter

  1. Open the triggers list in Admin Center.
  2. Search by name, or filter by category and by active or inactive.
  3. Open what looks relevant.

Search covers names, which is exactly why naming triggers as sentences pays off. A configuration where everything is called "trigger 4" cannot be searched at all.

The question search does not answer

"Which trigger sent this email?" Search looks at names, not at what a trigger contains.

The answer is on the ticket. Open its events and you see every rule that ran on each update, in order, with what it changed. That turns a hunt through the list into reading a record.

Before you change anything

Two habits that prevent the afternoon spent wondering why something broke.

  • Look at the events on a real ticket to see what actually runs, rather than what you think runs.
  • Check what else touches the same field. Filtering by category narrows this quickly if your categories reflect purpose.

Analysing business rules

Zendesk can show you which rules are firing and how often, which finds two useful things: rules that never fire, and rules firing far more than you expected. Both are usually wrong in an interesting way.
