Controls that let a reader change what they see. Useful in small numbers, and a source of wrong conclusions in large ones.

Add one

  1. Open the dashboard for editing.
  2. Add a filter or a data selector.
  3. Choose which reports it affects.
  4. Set a sensible default.
  5. Test each option, not just the default.

Set the default carefully

Most readers never change it. The default is therefore the dashboard for almost everybody, and choosing it thoughtlessly means most people see a view nobody designed.

Two or three controls

Date range, and one or two of group, brand or channel. Six controls produce combinations you have never looked at, some of which show almost no data and all of which look authoritative.

Check which reports a control affects

A filter applying to three of five reports produces a dashboard where half the numbers moved and half did not. Readers do not notice, and they compare them anyway.

Label them plainly

"Team" rather than the field's internal name. The reader is choosing, so the words have to make sense without knowing your configuration.

Test the empty combinations

Somebody will pick a group and a period with no tickets. Make sure that shows as empty rather than as zero performance.

Sometimes two dashboards is the answer

If readers always set the same filter, build it into the report instead. A control everybody sets the same way is a decision you should have made for them.
