The limits, stated plainly, so you stop trying to make these dashboards do the job that Explore already does.
No history
They show now. Yesterday afternoon is gone, and there is no going back to look at it. Anything about a period belongs in Explore.
Not customisable
The reports on them are fixed. You cannot add a metric, change a grouping or build your own version.
Where you need something they do not show, build it in Explore and accept that it is not live.
Limited filtering
Some filtering by group or channel, not the freedom of a report. A team wanting only their own slice may find the dashboard shows more than they want.
They will not match Explore
Different data, different moment, sometimes different definitions. Two numbers about the same thing that disagree, and neither is wrong.
Explaining this once to the team is easier than the recurring conversation.
Not a reporting source
Nothing to export, nothing to schedule, nothing to put in a monthly pack. If somebody needs it in a document, it is an Explore report.
What to do instead
- Want history? Explore.
- Want your own metric? Explore.
- Want it emailed? Explore, scheduled.
- Want a bit of live on a normal dashboard? Live components.
