Generative answers are counted, so it is worth knowing where they are being spent and whether they are earning it.
See where you stand
- Open the AI settings in Admin Center.
- Look at the usage for generative search.
- Compare it against the period before.
- Decide whether the volume matches the value you are getting.
Check it monthly, not annually
Usage follows traffic, and traffic follows things you do not control: a campaign, an outage, a season. A monthly look catches a change while it is still small.
Turn it off where it adds nothing
Generative answers help most where the question is broad and the answer lives across several articles. They add little where the reader wants one specific procedure, and nothing at all on a help centre with few articles.
Scope is a legitimate way to control usage: not every part of the help centre needs it.
Better articles cost less
Generated answers are assembled from what you have written. A well-structured article gets summarised accurately in one attempt; a vague one produces a vague answer, a follow-up question, and another attempt.
Content quality is a usage control, and it is the one that also improves everything else.
Watch what people ask afterwards
If readers routinely search again after a generated answer, the answer is not landing. That is worth more attention than the raw count.
