Dark mode in Zendesk is an account setting rather than a personal one, so it is an admin who turns it on for everybody.
Turn it on
- Open Admin Center.
- Go to Workspaces > Agent tools > Agent interface.
- Under Dark mode, allow agents to switch it on.
Once it is available, agents choose it for themselves from the avatar menu top right, under Appearance: light, dark, or match the system. Turning it on at account level makes the option exist; it does not force it on anyone.
If an agent cannot find the choice
An agent who opens Appearance and sees no dark option is looking at an account where the box in Admin Center is still off. It is the account setting that makes the choice appear, so that is the first place to look rather than the agent's own settings.
Match system appearance is worth mentioning to anyone who asks: it follows whatever the computer is set to, so it turns dark and light along with the machine's own day and night schedule instead of staying on one of the two.
What to check afterwards
Apps in the context panel are built by their own makers, and not all of them handle a dark background well. A white app panel against a dark workspace is the usual symptom.
If you have built your own app, it needs explicit work to be dark mode compatible. Zendesk documents what that involves, and it is not automatic.
What it does not change
Dark mode applies to the Agent Workspace only. Your help centre keeps whatever your theme defines, and Admin Center and Explore are unaffected.
