Getting a number: a new one from Zendesk, or your existing one brought across. The choice has consequences.
Add a new number
- Open Admin Center, then Channels, then Talk and email, then Talk.
- On the Lines tab, choose Add line, then Purchase a new number.
- Choose the country and type, then pick from the numbers offered.
- Provide an address where the country requires one.
- Assign it to a brand and a group.
- Call it and confirm it rings.
New number or port your own
- A new number is available immediately and nobody knows it. Fine for a new service, or alongside an existing one during a transition.
- Porting your existing number keeps everything customers already have. It takes weeks and needs paperwork.
Many organisations take a new number, point their old one at it temporarily, and port later once Talk is proven.
Address requirements
Many countries require a registered address for a local number, and some require it to be in that country. That is a regulatory requirement rather than a Zendesk one, and it is the usual reason a number cannot be issued immediately.
Assign it deliberately
Brand and group both matter. A number left on the default brand in a multibrand account routes calls to the wrong team and reports them as the wrong business.
