Can I turn off inbound calls

Yes, several ways, and which you choose decides what the caller hears. Voicemail-only is usually the right one.

The options

  • Set the number to voicemail only. Callers hear your greeting and leave a message. The gentlest option and usually the right one.
  • Remove the number. Callers get a dead line. Only appropriate for a number you are retiring.
  • Narrow the business hours. Inbound stops outside them, with your out-of-hours behaviour taking over.
  • Agents make themselves unavailable. Temporary, and it falls through to whatever you configured.

What people usually mean

Outbound only. Agents ring customers and nobody rings in. Voicemail-only on the number does this while still catching returned calls, which will happen because your number appeared on their phone.

A quiet afternoon. Narrower hours or agents unavailable, rather than anything permanent.

Do not let it ring out

Whatever you choose, a caller should hear something. A number that rings and rings is the worst option and it is the one that happens by accident, when agents are unavailable and no voicemail was configured.
