Yes, and it is the lowest-risk way to start with Talk: keep your number, point it at a Zendesk one.
How
- Take a Zendesk number.
- Configure Talk fully: greetings, hours, routing, voicemail.
- Ask your current provider to forward your existing number to it.
- Test by calling your existing number.
Why this is a good first step
Customers keep the number they know, and you prove Talk under real calls before committing to a port. If it does not suit you, removing the forward puts everything back.
Porting later is then a formality rather than a launch.
What to watch
- You pay both providers. Your existing line stays live, plus the Zendesk number.
- Quality depends on the forward. A poor connection at your current provider carries through.
- The caller ID may change. Some forwarding shows the forwarding number rather than the caller's, which removes your agent's context. Check this on a test call.
Do not leave it forever
Forwarding is a bridge. Running it for two years means paying twice and depending on a provider you no longer use for anything else. Decide a date to port or to stop.
