Before you change or delete a user segment, find out what depends on it. There is a list, and it is worth reading.
Look it up
- Open the user segments in Knowledge.
- Open the segment.
- Look at where it is used: sections, articles, and community topics.
Why this comes first
A segment is not a label on one article. Editing its conditions changes who can see everything it is attached to, in one move, without a warning proportional to the effect.
Tightening a condition to fix one section can remove a whole category from customers who had it yesterday.
Deleting one
Whatever used it needs a new setting. Work through the list first and decide what each item should become, rather than deleting and discovering the answer from a customer.
Reading the list tells you something else
A segment used in one place is doing the work of an article setting, and probably should be one. A segment used in eighty places is load-bearing and deserves care.
Segments that turn out to be used nowhere can go, and there are usually a few.
Verify after any change
Sign in as somebody in the segment and as somebody outside it, and check both a section and an article. Two minutes, and it is the only check that reflects what readers actually get.
