A 404 on a recording link means the file is gone, and there are two reasons for that, one of which you can prevent.
What it means
The link still exists in the call history because the call happened. The recording behind it does not, so there is nothing to open.
Reason one: the retention period passed
Recordings are deleted on a schedule. If the call is older than your retention period, this is the system doing exactly what it was told.
Nothing recovers it. If this keeps happening to calls you still need, the period is set too short for how you work.
Reason two: the system ran out of storage
When storage fills up, older recordings are deleted so the system can keep running. That happens regardless of the retention period, so a recording well inside its window can disappear.
This one is preventable, and it is worth knowing which of the two happened to you.
Finding out which
open a ticket with the date of the call. We can see whether it aged out or was removed early, and if it was removed early, how close you are to the limit now.
The second answer usually leads to adding a storage block, which is cheaper than the conversation you are having about the missing recording.
