Five different messages, five different causes. Find yours in the table and you have the answer straight away.

Symptoms: which message did you get?

Adding a social or messaging channel fails, the sign-in at the platform succeeds, and the channel never appears in Zendesk. The wording tells you which of five situations you are in, so read it before changing anything.

Message Cause What to do
Facebook page already in use Another Zendesk account is connected to that page for Messenger. Remove the channel there first, under Admin Center > Channels > Messaging, and delete it.
Instagram profile already in use Another Zendesk account is connected to that Instagram page. Remove the Instagram Direct channel there, in the same place, and delete it.
Check all information is correct and try again A permission was not granted during setup, specifically Manage and access Page conversations in Messenger. Reinstall Instagram Direct and accept every permission Zendesk asks for.
Couldn't add the channel, try again later The Instagram account is not a business account, or it is not linked to a Facebook page. Convert it to a business account and connect it to the Facebook page.
Something went wrong, give it a moment and try again The Instagram page has no name assigned. Open Instagram and give the page a name.

Two of these are about Instagram being set up wrongly

A personal Instagram account cannot be connected at all, and an Instagram account that is not linked to a Facebook page cannot either. Both are done in Instagram and Facebook, not in Zendesk.

The page name is the one nobody expects. An Instagram page with no name assigned produces a message that sounds like a temporary glitch, and waiting will not fix it.

Administrator, and staying that way

The account you connect with must have administrator permissions on the page, and must keep them for as long as the integration runs. Being able to post is not the same thing, and a page you merely help manage will not appear in the list to choose from.

That second half matters more than it reads. A channel that worked for a year and then stopped is often somebody's admin rights being removed during a reorganisation of the social team.

Already connected somewhere else

A page or profile can be connected to one Zendesk account at a time. Where it is already in use, including in an old test account or a previous supplier's account, it has to be released there first.

You cannot do that from your side. Somebody with access to the other account has to remove the channel under Admin Center > Channels > Messaging and delete it.

No message, just no page in the list

A different failure with the same feeling: setup runs, but the page or account you want is not in the drop-down. That is Zendesk not having permission to see it, and it is fixed on the Facebook side rather than in Zendesk.

  1. Sign in to the Facebook account that administers the page or Instagram account.
  2. Open Facebook Business Integrations, find Zendesk and click View and edit.
  3. Grant every permission for each page and Instagram account that is missing.
  4. Add the channel again in Admin Center; the pages now appear in the list.

If the message is not one of the five

Zendesk reports what the platform told it, and the platform's wording is often vaguer than the list above. Check the business settings at Meta before assuming the problem is on the Zendesk side, and send us the exact wording if it still will not connect.
