This is a validation error, not a fault. One field is in the wrong format, and the message does not say which.
Symptoms: the save is refused
Failed to update your WhatsApp profile
- Saving the business profile returns the message above.
- Nothing indicates which field is the problem.
- The same values saved fine before you changed something else.
Nothing is broken. A value in the profile is entered incorrectly or in the wrong format, and WhatsApp refuses the whole update rather than the offending field.
The four rules that catch people
| Website | Must begin with https://. A bare www. address is rejected, and this is the most common cause. |
| Description | Maximum 256 characters. Longer text is refused rather than truncated. |
| Industry | Optional, but if you fill it in the value has to match one of Meta's accepted names exactly. Your own wording will not save. |
| Profile picture | On some accounts it has to be set from WhatsApp itself rather than through Zendesk. |
The industry field is the sly one. It looks like free text, it accepts what you type, and the update then fails with no indication that this was the field.
Resolution steps
- Check the website field first, and add
https://if it is missing. - Count the description. Over 256 characters, shorten it.
- Clear the industry field entirely and save. If it saves now, that field was the problem.
- If the picture is the change you are making, set it in WhatsApp instead.
Save one field at a time
Because the message never names the field, editing several at once leaves you guessing. Save the description on its own, then the website, then the rest. It takes a minute longer and it tells you exactly which value WhatsApp objects to.
The display name is a separate matter
Display names are reviewed by Meta and are expected to match your business. A name in review is locked until the review finishes, which looks like a failure but is not one, and no amount of retrying will change it.
That is a wait rather than a fix. If the launch of your number is being held up by it, the name you chose is usually the reason.
