How do I find the widget code on my website

Zendesk holds the code to install; your website holds the copy that is running. Search the page source for ze-snippet to find it.

Where do I get the code?

In Admin Center, click Channels, then Messaging and social > Messaging, click the name of the widget, scroll down and expand Installation. The copy icon puts the snippet on your clipboard, and Email code to a team member sends it to whoever maintains the site.

It goes just before the closing </body> tag, on every page where the widget should appear. On your help centre it is simpler still: the same Installation panel has a checkbox that puts it there for you.

Where is the copy that is already running?

The snippet looks like <script id="ze-snippet" src="https://static.zdassets.com/ekr/snippet.js?key=…">, so searching a page's source for ze-snippet finds it in seconds, and the key tells you which widget channel that page is using.

Then look in one of three places

Your content management system. A global setting for scripts, a theme header or footer file, or a plugin for third-party scripts. That is where somebody put it, and where to change it.

A tag manager. Common in larger organisations, and the reason searching the site templates finds nothing. It also explains a widget that appears on some pages and not others, because tags have their own firing rules.

The check worth making

With several brands, confirm the key on the page matches the brand you expect. A widget installed with another brand's script works perfectly and routes everything to the wrong place. And if the widget appears nowhere at all, the firewall is worth ruling out before the code.
