A theme edit that does not appear is nearly always an unpublished draft or a cached page.
Symptoms
- You saved a change and the live site looks the same.
- It appears in the preview and not on the site.
- It shows for you and not for a colleague.
Resolution steps
1. The theme is not published
The most common cause. Editing a theme changes that theme, and readers see whichever theme is published. Editing a copy while a different one is live produces exactly this.
Check which theme is published, and whether it is the one you edited.
2. Your browser cached it
Stylesheets are cached aggressively. A hard refresh, or a private window, tells you whether the change is live and your browser is behind.
This is also why it shows for a colleague and not for you, or the reverse.
3. Another rule is winning
In a stylesheet, a more specific rule elsewhere can override yours. The browser's developer tools show which rule applies, which turns guessing into reading.
4. You edited the wrong template
Help centre themes have several templates: home page, category, section, article. A change to the article template does nothing on the home page.
Check in a private window
Signed out and uncached. That is what a reader sees, and it separates two of these four causes immediately.
