Choosing and customising a theme

The standard theme plus your settings gets most help centres where they need to be. What a custom theme adds, and costs.

Customise the standard theme

  1. Open the theme settings in Knowledge.
  2. Set colours, fonts and logo.
  3. Choose what appears on the home page.
  4. Preview, then publish.

Start here and stop here if you can

A standard theme with your branding looks like your company, works on every screen, and keeps receiving Zendesk's improvements without you doing anything.

The moment you edit the code, that last part stops.

What a custom theme buys

  • A layout the settings do not offer.
  • Exact alignment with a designed website.
  • Elements that are not in the standard theme at all.

All real reasons, and all worth their cost only when somebody will maintain the result.

What it costs

Ownership. Your theme no longer tracks Zendesk's, so improvements and fixes have to be applied by hand, and a theme built two years ago by somebody who has left is a liability rather than an asset.

Preview before publishing

Themes can be previewed live without affecting readers. Look at the home page, a category, a section and an article, on a wide screen and a phone. Those five views cover nearly everything.
