Content tags group articles and community posts across sections. Different from labels, and worth keeping separate.
Tag something
- Open the article or post.
- Add a content tag, or pick an existing one.
- Save.
Readers can then follow the tag to everything carrying it, wherever it lives.
How they differ from labels
Labels feed search and are largely invisible. Content tags are a navigable grouping a reader can click and browse.
So labels can be generous and slightly messy. Content tags cannot: each one becomes a page somebody might land on.
Reuse before you create
The list of tags is shared, and picking from it takes one keystroke more than typing a new one. That keystroke is the difference between a working set of tags and forty near-duplicates.
Tag the subject, not the state
"Billing" and "Installation" are subjects a reader might browse. "Reviewed", "Draft" and "Q3" are internal states, and a reader who lands on a page called Q3 learns nothing.
A tag with two articles is not a tag
Grouping exists to give somebody more than they had. Where a tag holds one or two items, either it should be broader or the content should simply be linked.
