Can I recover a deleted report or dashboard

Usually not. Which is why the habit that matters is cloning rather than editing, and exporting before deleting.

What to check first

  1. Is it actually deleted, or just not shared with you any more?
  2. Did somebody else build a copy? Cloned reports are common and one may survive.
  3. Is it on another dashboard? A report can be removed from one and still live on another.

Those three find it more often than people expect.

If it is genuinely gone

It usually has to be rebuilt. Standard reports are the exception: they can be restored from the standard set, which is one more reason never to edit them directly.

The habits that make this a non-event

  • Clone, never edit a standard report or a shared one.
  • Export a dashboard before restructuring it.
  • Write down the definition of anything important: dataset, metric, attributes, filters. Four lines, and rebuilding becomes ten minutes rather than an afternoon of guessing.

Restrict who can delete

Editor access is what allows deletion. Where a lot of people have it, this happens eventually, and usually to the report somebody senior looks at monthly.

Before you delete anything

Check what dashboards use it. A report that looks unused from the report list is often on a dashboard somebody else opens weekly.
