The handful of editor shortcuts worth learning, and the two that prevent most formatting problems.
The two that matter most
- Paste without formatting. Ctrl+Shift+V, or Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac.
- Clear formatting on text already pasted, from the editor's toolbar.
Nearly every strange-looking article traces back to a paste from a document or a website that brought its own fonts, colours and spacing. Pasting as plain text avoids the problem instead of fixing it afterwards.
The everyday ones
- Bold and italic: Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I, or Cmd on a Mac.
- Insert a link: Ctrl+K or Cmd+K.
- Undo and redo: Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y, or Cmd+Z and Cmd+Shift+Z.
- Save: Ctrl+S or Cmd+S.
Headings
Set from the paragraph menu rather than by making text big and bold. Headings are structure, and structure is what search, the table of contents and screen readers use. Bold large text is none of those things.
Save often
The editor is a web page in a browser tab. Tabs close, sessions expire, laptops sleep. Ctrl+S costs nothing.
