Voice is unforgiving about network quality. What to prioritise on your own network, and what we set on ours.
Why voice is different
A web page that arrives 200 milliseconds late is a web page. A voice packet that arrives 200 milliseconds late is a gap in a sentence. Voice cannot wait for a retry, so what matters is not bandwidth but consistency: low packet loss, low jitter, low delay.
Most call quality complaints are a local network problem, not a carrier problem. A saturated uplink at four in the afternoon does not show up in a speed test at nine in the morning.
Give voice priority
Wildix marks its voice traffic with DSCP, a tag that tells network equipment this packet goes first. The tag only helps if your equipment acts on it.
- Configure your routers and firewalls to prioritise DSCP-marked traffic. This is the step that actually changes anything, and it is on your side.
- On Windows, QoS policy can be pushed through Group Policy, so you set it once for the whole domain rather than machine by machine.
- Per user, the Web Phone has its own DSCP setting in Collaboration Settings under Web Phone.
Some networks drop marked traffic instead of prioritising it. A few routers, firewalls and providers discard packets carrying a DSCP tag they do not expect, which turns a quality feature into dropped audio. If calls got worse rather than better after enabling it, this is the first thing to suspect. Tell us and we turn it off centrally.
Wifi deserves a second look
Wired beats wifi for a desk that never moves. Where wifi is the only option, the usual culprits are roaming between access points mid-call, and too many access points on overlapping channels fighting each other. More coverage is not always better coverage.
What we set, and what you set
The DSCP value on the phone system itself is ours. Your own network equipment, your Windows policy and your wifi are yours. Between the two sits your internet connection, and that is usually where an unexplained afternoon dip lives.
One thing to know about iPhones
iOS does not support DSCP marking. Calls from an iPhone cannot be prioritised this way, so on a busy wifi network they will feel it first.
