History shows what happened to an article and who did it. Different from revisions, and useful for a different question.
History against revisions
- Revisions are the content at each save. What the article said.
- History is the events: published, unpublished, moved, assigned, verified. What was done to it.
For "what did this used to say", revisions. For "why is this in the wrong section" or "who unpublished this", history.
Where it answers a real question
- An article that disappeared. History shows who unpublished or archived it, and when.
- One that moved. Sections change and nobody remembers doing it.
- Visibility that changed, which is the one worth knowing about when something internal became public.
Look before you ask
Most of the questions that begin "does anybody know why this article..." are answered here in ten seconds. It is worth knowing it exists, because it is not somewhere people look by habit.
It is not an audit log
