Calls to Japan arrive with the caller's number hidden or randomised, and automated calling is not allowed.
Your number will not arrive
Calls placed to Japan presenting a Japanese number have that number anonymised: it is either hidden or replaced with a random one. The call goes through; the caller ID does not survive the journey.
What that means for you
Nobody in Japan can call you back on the number you presented, because they never saw it. Where a callback matters, say the number during the call or send it in writing beforehand.
It also means a customer will not recognise you from the display, so expect more calls to go unanswered than they would elsewhere.
Automated calling is not allowed
Robocalls and anything that generates calls automatically are out. That covers automated reminders and campaign dialling as much as it covers nuisance calling.
What happens if you ignore it
The destination can be blocked or the rate for it can rise. Both arrive without warning, and neither is something we apply: it is the receiving side reacting to traffic it does not accept.
Ordinary calls are fine
A person calling a person in Japan works. Plan around the caller ID rather than around the call.
