Seeing what a setting does

Plan requirement

The i next to a setting shows a short animation of what that setting changes in the widget, so you can see the effect before you change it. The button's name for screen readers is What does this setting do?

Where you find the i

Only settings with an animation have an i.

Open and close the animation

Move the mouse over the i, or reach it with the Tab key. After a moment a card opens beside the panel, with the setting's name, a short explanation and the animation, which plays in a loop.

  • Moving the mouse to the card keeps it open; moving away closes it.
  • A click or tap, Enter or the space bar opens the card at once. Doing it again closes it.
  • Esc closes the card, and so does scrolling the panel.

The Preview settings panel next to the Web Widget preview of a fictional bike shop. The i next to Style is highlighted, and the card beside it shows the title Style, the explanation that Default shows bubbles like the Web Widget and Web SDK, and a still of the widget with the style set to Minimalistic.

Reduced motion and language

When your computer is set to reduce motion, the card shows one still image instead of the animation: the moment that shows the change best. The animations come in English and Dutch and follow the language of Chrome. Animations without text are the same in both.

What the animations show

The animations are made with the extension's own Web Widget and channel previews, for the fictional shop Bluebird Bikes, with the AI agent Ava and the customer Sam. They show what a setting changes, not your own widget: your colours, texts and AI agent are in the preview itself.

A few examples

Theme colors, primary: the header changes from the shop's dark blue to a lighter blue and back. This colour also paints the launcher and other key elements.
Cited sources: the sources of a generative reply as a Sources button, a bulleted list or a numbered list.
Streaming text animation: off, the AI agent's reply appears at once; on, it appears word by word.
Dark mode: a messaging app preview, here WhatsApp, switches between light and dark.
Test embedded mode, in the inspector's Lab: the widget goes from floating to a place inside the page, then to a split view with the conversation list and the conversation apart.
