Placing an article in several sections

One article can appear in several sections without being duplicated. The honest answer to filing dilemmas.

How

  1. Open the article.
  2. Open its placements.
  3. Add the additional sections.
  4. Save.

It is one article with one address and one set of revisions, listed in several places.

Why this beats copying

Duplicating an article gives you two that drift apart. One gets updated, the other does not, and a reader who finds the stale one has no way to know.

Placement gives you the same navigation benefit with one article to maintain.

When it fits

  • An article about billing that also belongs under getting started.
  • Something relevant to two products.
  • A troubleshooting article that belongs both under its feature and under a general problems section.

Use it sparingly

An article in five sections makes each section less meaningful. Sections should tell a reader roughly what they contain, and one that shares most of its articles with another is not a distinct place.

Two placements is normal. Four suggests the structure needs looking at rather than the article.
